2.06 – Finding Your Business on Facebook
Finding Your Business on Facebook
Facebook offers its users four ways to relate to the real world: geotagging, places, check-ins, and offers.
Geotagging on Facebook
On both its desktop and mobile app versions, Facebook allows users to add a location to any post, whether text, image, or video. If someone else tries to tag a post that names another Facebook user who isn’t a friend, the second person must approve the geotag before it appears. For more information, see www.facebook.com/about/location.
Getting close with places nearby
Places appears as an option only when you use the Facebook app on mobile devices with location turned on. Users find places by typing in a search term (a keyword, for example) in the search bar at the top of the page and either selecting the <search term > near me option in the drop-down menu or by tapping the blue Search button on the bottom right of the screen and then scrolling all the way to the right and selecting Places from the tabs at the top of the results page.
Checking in on Facebook
To enable check-ins at your business, you must add your business address to the About section (left menu bar) of your business page. Once your address is added, search for your business name from your mobile device. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the list of existing locations, tap the “+ Add a New Place,” then follow the instructions on the following screens.
You must do this from a mobile device with Location Services turned on. For more information about Location Services, see www.facebook.com/help/275925085769221.
Once you have your business’ location set up, users can now check into your business. From their news feeds, users must tap the Check-in icon and select their location. They can add a description of what they’re doing and then tap Publish to share their location with their friends.

Post a counter card at your business to remind people to check in. For more information on check-ins at your business, see www. facebook.com/help/374794869276912.
Results for check-ins are visible on your Facebook Insights page but only after 30 people have checked in at your business. To understand any of these Facebook geomarketing options in more detail. The local review site Yelp (www.yelp.com) has a location-based check-in feature on its Android and iOS devices. Instagram and Snapchat also offer optional geotags. Users must always turn on geotags; geotags default to Off on all social media for security and privacy reasons.
Making a Facebook offer they can’t refuse
If you want to improve traffic from Facebook users when they are close by, use Facebook offers to entice folks with a discount or other special offer on your Facebook timeline or in a mobile ad. Although there’s no charge to write an offer as a simple post, Facebook will charge if you decide to boost your post or advertise your offer.
All offers must comply with Facebook’s Terms and Conditions. For more about creating offers, see Facebook’s help centre at https://www.facebook.com/business/help/365342307374900.
First, you must create an offer either directly from your Facebook page or from the Ads Manager. To do this from your page, follow these steps:
- On your page’s timeline, click the Offer button, below the Create Post area.
- Fill out the various options for your offer.
For example, select whether your offer is a percentage off a purchase, online, in stores, or both. You can also choose to boost your post.
- Click the Publish button.
You return to your page, and the offer now appears at the top of your timeline. Your offer now shows up in your news feed as well as under the Offers tab underneath your page’s name.
- (Optional) Boost the post.
If you didn’t boost your offer when you created it, you can still go back and do so. This is optional, but it’s a way to get more eyeballs on your offer.
For more information on creating an offer from your business page, go to www.facebook.com/help/410451192330456.
Alternatively, you can advertise the offer using the Ads Manager by following these steps:
- Log in as the page administrator.
- Select Ad Center from the left menu bar.
- Click any of the Create Ad buttons.
The Choose Goal screen appears.
- Choose the goal of your ad.
Since your offer was added as a post to your news feed, select Boost a Post from the six options.
- Click the blue Boost Post button next to the offer you want to Boost.
- Fill in the required information to set your audience, ad budget, duration, and placement.
Your ad can be shown on Facebook, Instagram, or both.
- Once you’re finished filling in all the information, click the Boost Post Now button on the bottom right.
Although Facebook Messenger is a placement option for ads, you cannot promote offers on Messenger.
